BEETLES AND FORESTS NEWS IN COLORADO

POLITICS AND THE BEETLE

CONTINUING SAGA OF THE BEETLE ISSUES IN THE WEST

We should all strive to motivate like the Black Hills initiatives: mpb in the Black Hills

If we had done this 20+ years ago in Colorado, we would not have millions of dead trees ready to burn (and burning) in our forests.

Slowly becoming as serious as the mpb issue is the spruce beetle: spruce beetle in Colorado
Yes, this is nature’s way of thinning and cleaning the forests, but we also contribute with many of our management practices (i.e. by “not managing the forest”).
Much more popular to ask for fire fighting $ than forest mgt. $. I see that getting much worse with the continuing attitude by our political decision makers.
This translates into a national security issue and an unhealthy land base issue for the U.S. and North America.

 Enough of this already!

Congress is Doing What?

Wildfires and our lands...are they aware?

Is this administration aware of these issues? If so, is it even a priority? Doesn't matter how strong we claim to be. If our lands are not managed properly (agriculture, forests, etc.), our national security is at risk!
While Forest Service chases down wildfires, the solution gets away from us

Why is Forest Management More Important than Wildfire Management?

Not likely that the new Federal Initiatives care much about our resource management. The "environment is an enemy to business". Our environment (where we live) is looked at as some "out there world" made up by "tree huggers" and Liberals. Aside from this hogwash, from a forester's perspective, I see the damage that has been done for decades in this country by not managing our forests (and I am not talking about wilderness areas!). So, what does forest management have to do with wildfires. A healthy forest reduces the risk of catastrophic wildfires!
Here is one example: Beetle Kill Continues in West. So what comes next? Guaranteed fires and destruction from the "catastrophic fires". Fires are of course good when they are not in the category of "catastrophic"!!
